After the Storm

Hirokazu Kore-eda
Umi yori mo mada fukaku
Japan 2016 / 117’

A once highly regarded writer named Ryota works sporadically at a detective agency and blows his money on gambling. At the moment, he is thinking about his former, short-lived fame. He botches several attempts to regain control of his life and get closer to his relatives: his mother, who bounced back rather quickly following the recent death of her carousing husband (and Ryota's father); his ex-wife, who is in the process of forming a new relationship with another man; and, above all, his young son, whose child support he has not been paying. During a storm one night, Ryota gets a chance to renew contact with his loved ones and explain everything that happened in the past that put distance between them. Drawing on personal memories and experiences, and with his characteristic lyrical realism and sensitivity toward his characters, Hirokazu Koreeda creates a subtle, nuanced portrait of a broken family whose members deal with this fact in different ways. With a great deal of warmth and wisdom, the film also tells us that, to regain balance in life following a storm, one has to settle accounts with the past fairly and calmly.
