Toni Erdmann

Maren Ade
Germany, Austria 2016 / 162’

This film got the most buzz at the last Cannes Film Festival and best reviews from "Screen International" critics, who raved about its abstract, absurd, and simultaneously non-pretentious humor. Director Maren Ade shows several days that a father, an old prankster, decides to spend with his adult daughter, a manager sent by a corporation to its Romanian office. He arrives unannounced in Bucharest, where his jokes and madness pulverize the woman's daily life. Toni Erdmann is a rebellious comedy about what is truly important, a story about two generations and the widening chasm between them. It is about a generation that valued more than money in the bank and a corporate corner office. It is also about the reality of a woman who bet it all on her career but now has to find her values. Toni Erdmann seems to be composed of pure character defects, but may be the only person able to show his workaholic daughter what she missed on her corporate ladder climb.

German director and producer Maren Ade debuted in 2003 with The Forest for the Tree and achieved international renown with Everyone Else, which screened at the Berlinale. While deeply rooted in modernity, her films stray from that convention with their absurdity and surrealism. Toni Erdmann became the most talked about film of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
