In California

Charles Redon
France 2015 / 78’

Charles has been filming his girlfriend for several years. He is fascinated by the elegance of her movements, her small body and the iron discipline to which she subjects her body. Mathilde is a ballerina, and a very ambitious one at that, and so it is not enough that she has to constantly train, but on top of that, she hardly eats. The more ruthless Mathilde is to her body, the more Charles is fascinated by her physicality. Their relationship, which is somewhat toxic at the beginning, turns into a real obsession when they move from Paris to San Francisco. Mathilde gets a job there as a prima ballerina, and Charles takes on a project to make a film about her, about them, and about their life together. Soon, however, the idea of making a film journal turns into an act of desperation, and the director has to resort to increasingly unethical methods to get material. Could making a film perhaps just be an excuse to justify spying on girls? In his aroused mind, Charles's creative needs mix with his fixation on Mathilde, and his morbid jealousy with flashes of humor. An honest and humorous portrait of the inner workings of a dysfunctional couple of young artists.
