Watching Hosanna is like breaking the window in a souvenir shop. Katarzyna Gondek’s film combines a ferocity worthy of Ulrich Seidl with a grace befitting the caprices of little girls. This story about an encounter between a very young girl and her religion-obsessed grandmother leads to an interesting confrontation of attitudes. In Hosanna, pathos is compromised by absurd humor, and simplistic thinking bends under the weight of unrestrained imagination.
