Bergman Revisited Set

86’
The Memory of Ingmar Bergman Scener ur natten

An anthology of short films inspired by the work of the maker of Cries and Whispers. What these films most have in common with Bergman's work is their subject matter. Most of the stories concern complicated, or simply toxic, interpersonal relations. One of them is about the problems facing an old married couple, while another is about the problems of a young couple. The set also includes a compellingly brash animation about Bergman's love life, portraying him as both a profligate baby-maker and the jealous type. His influence can also be seen in visual terms. Unforgiving close-ups of tormented faces. Oppressively intimate staging. The final work includes images from particular films that are skillfully recreated and edited into something like a music video.
