Closeness

Santa Barbara, the end of the 1970s. Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) is being raised in an environment filled with feminism, the scent of drugs, and the sounds of punk. He lives with his divorced mother, Dorothea (Golden Globe nominee Annette Bening), who is well aware that she is losing touch with her teenage son. For help raising him, she turns to her "very modern" subletter, Abbie (Greta Gerwig), and her son's friend, Julie (Elle Fanning), who has her own issues when it comes to navigating adolescence, though she is a lot more experienced than Jamie, at least sexually. What impact will these three women have on him? And will Dorothea open herself up to other roles besides being a mother? Mike Mills based his screenplay on his own childhood experiences, and he has called the film a love letter to the women who raised him. 20th Century Women is a charming memoire about the "wonderful years" of adolescence, revealing the sweetness inherent to losing one's innocence, as well as the weight that comes with inevitable disappointments and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
