The Other Side of Hope

Christian, the director of a prestigious museum of modern art, seems to have everything under control. After his divorce, he is a model father to his daughters, drives an electric car, and helps the needy, especially if it does not require too much effort on his part. While preparing for a showing of an installation called The Square, for which he has high hopes, the first cracks begin to appear in his image as a perfect citizen. After his astonishing Force Majeure, Ruben Östlund once again revels in ridiculing political correctness: in his latest, Palme d'Or-winning film, the director's extended middle finger is clear for everyone to see. Offering an unexpected bonus in the form of one of the funniest erotic (but not too erotic) scenes of the year-and perhaps even of all time-the Swedish director compounds the absurdities as quickly as if he were in a race with Roy Andersson himself, at the same time proving that, in today's society, even freedom of speech has its limits.
