A Way Between Two Points

Sebastián Diaz Morales
El Camino Entre Dos Puntos
Argentina, Netherlands 2010 / 81’

A contemplative road movie with the main character played by the land of Patagonia, a place inhabited by few people in the southernmost of Argentina, that is, almost at the end of the world.

An exceptional sound landscape (as important as the visual one; built of long shots and unusual points of view) is made by wind whistling, pebble crunching and sometimes a fragment of music. In spite of appearances, the empty landscape is not a place where virgin nature may be found but it is rather a desolate post-industrial wasteland. There are only terrible fragments of broken machinery, ruins of industrial structures, half-abandoned villages and drilling stations falling into ruin left in an area after intense oil extraction. However, this feature debut by an Argentine video artist is not a protest against industrialization - quite the contrary, as almost without words, Morales constructs a pessimistic morality play about the clash of civilization and nature where civilization and all human actions become only a momentary interlude in the process of entropy and return to the prehistoric state.
