It's the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) has just become the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to gain the respect of his colleagues and prove his worth, Stallworth first decides to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan on his own, which he manages to do surprisingly easily-over the telephone. With the consent of his commanding officers, a special task force is created, which also includes Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), who, like Stallworth, also penetrates the Klan. Iconic director Spike Lee, the maker of Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever and Malcolm X,has not made a film as impressive asBlacKkKlansman in a long time. It's a brilliantly funny hit film, but it remains socially engaged nonetheless. Beneath its nostalgic outer layer is a serious commentary on American modernity, where racist attitudes have been revived.History repeats itself in disturbing ways, like in Charlottesville, " says Lee, "and it should always be a warning to posterity.
