Fanny and Alexander

Ingmar Bergman
Fanny och Alexander
Sweden, France, West Germany 1982 / 188’
Autumn Sonata Saraband

If someone were to name Fanny and Alexander as Ingmar Bergman's magnum opus, then they at least wouldn't be guilty of heresy. It is undoubtedly an important work in the Swedish director's oeuvre: epic in scale and ambition and filled with autobiographical references, it was planned as the crowning achievement to his career. Set in the early 20th century, the film revolves around the wealthy Ekdahl family, and three of its members in particular: the eponymous siblings and their mother, Emilie, who, following the death of her husband, marries a much older clergyman, which is probably one of the biggest mistakes of her life, given that this eloquent man has the empathy and mannerisms of an inquisitor. In a story told with a steady, unhurried rhythm, comedy is intertwined with tragedy, and providing a counterpoint to realistic scenes are individual fragments of fantasy in which the imagination of young Alexander can be expressed.

Ingmar Bergman

Ingmar Bergman was one of the most important filmmakers in the history of artistic cinema. Born in 1918, he died in 2007 on the very same day that another legend passed away, Michelangelo Antonioni. He began his career in the film industry by correcting screenplays for others. He gained directorial experience as an assistant to Alf Sjöberg on Torment, for which he wrote the script. He made his directorial debut with Crisis. He gained international fame thanks to Smiles of a Summer Night, and then cemented his position with The SeventhSeal and Wild Strawberries, filmed shortly thereafter. The coming years and decades brought him even more success. He regularly worked with cinematographer Sven Nykvist and actors such as Harriet Andersson, Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow. He also worked in the theater.
