New Horizons International Competition

A platform for the presentation of bold artistic cinema that seeks new forms of expression extending far beyond the boundaries of conventional film. This is a place for cinematic visionaries and uncompromising artists who have the courage to follow their own path in defiance of popular trends and to talk about significant issues in their own unique language. A selection of personal, often provocative premiere films from all over the world.

The competition offers three prizes: the Grand Prix for best film along with 15,000 euros, awarded by the international jury and the Audience Award.

Masters

Films by New Horizons masters-filmmakers who are certainly no strangers to Wrocław audiences.

Retrospectives

A review of films by outstanding filmmakers from around the world who revolutionized the language of cinema.

Visual Front

A selection of original, full-length documentaries, experimental films, and genre hybrids about artists or inspired by the various disciplines or movements in contemporary art or art of a bygone era.

Third Eye

The Third Eye is a section exploring contemporary times, examining the trends and ideas that define it. Sensitive to current political and cultural contexts. Each year, the section is guided by a different concept, from the area of high culture or pop culture, which we look at in various film contexts.

Discoveries

Discoveries by film selectors from some of the the biggest festivals, as well as hidden gems dug up at minor film events.

Waves

Here we collect films by creators who are already on the rise, having made daring debuts, but invariably setting the direction and dictating the rhythm of contemporary cinema.

Lost Lost Lost

Films by directors who were discovered by the Festival over the years: forgotten and underappreciated works, but yet bold, atypical, and searching for something innovative.

Midnight Madness

The latest films that play with the conventions of genre cinema.

Shortlist

Shortlist is a selection of Polish shorts that best express New Horizons ideals. It includes works by filmmakers using shorts to boldly articulate their voice and sensibility, seek their own language devoid of clichéd forms, and gradually formulate their distinctive style.

Season

A selection of the most important films of the season that have already been shown in Polish cinemas.

Special Screenings

Films that cannot be easily pigeonholed into simple categories and genres. What they have in common is excellent quality.
