This year’s festival will give us an opportunity to experience a new dimension of cinema at a special mBank VR (virtual reality) zone.
On the second floor of New Horizons Cinema, there will be six stands with VR glasses, where the following four extraordinary films will be screened every day from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m.:
Borderline, dir. Assaf Machnes – a moving story, based on real events, about Israeli border guards patrolling the scorching Sinai in search of African refugees;
Summation of Force, dir. Narelle Autio, Matthew Bate, Trent Parke – a visually stunning story about two brothers practicing cricket. Their training provides an opportunity to explore both the technical possibilities of VR technology and storytelling;
Conscious Existence, dir. Marc Zimmermann – the latest work by a master of the art of VR, who this time looks at the phenomenon of human consciousness. A feast for (nearly) all the senses; and
Postcard from the Warsaw Uprising [Kartka z Powstania], prod. National Center for Culture – the first fictionalized historical production made with VR technology in Poland. The film tracks the fate of one of the individuals involved in the Warsaw Uprising, Capt. Władysław Sieroszewski “Sabały.”
All screenings are free of charge. To use the VR zone, you just need to speak to the staff members supervising the screenings (in the VR zone itself).
mBank is the festival partner for the Gala Screenings section during 19th New Horizons International Film Festival. The program for the section includes Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, Xavier Dolan’s Matthias and Maxime, Agnieszka Holland’s Mr. Jones, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.
The New Horizons Association, the British Council and Creative Europe Desk Polska invite you to an open lecture titled Virtual Reality and Beyond. Sten-Kristian Saluveer, curator of the NEXT program on new technologies and innovations held at the Cannes Film Festival (Marche du Film) and the founder of Storytek, an Estonian accelerator and innovation center for the creative industries, will discuss new technologies and trends in the digital media market and the use of VR technology. The lecture, in English, is open to the public.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday, 30 July at 2:00 p.m. at AC hotel by Marriott, Plac Wolności 10, and is part of the New Horizons + training program and one of a number of festival events dedicated to VR technology.
