My House Without Me
The paradoxes of history are played out in the story of two lives. Born in eastern Poland, ten-year-old Janina is deported to Kazakhstan at the outset of the Second Word War. Back on a wave of post-war repatriations, she settles in the city of Szczecin, in a house vacated by relocated Germans – Annemarie’s family. Who is the invader, who bears the guilt, who is the victim? This narrative of memory and image is as fluid as borders during wartime.
