One of the most talked about films at the Sundance Festival and in Rotterdam. The story of a family and a birthday party that unexpectedly turns into a half fairy tale, half horror story. Realism slowly gives way to the pressure of surrealistic events, with animation creeping into the plot, and the characters painted on the music box coming to life. With Nyholm, the monotonous, looped sound of this most melancholic of children's toys doesn’t just appear in the soundtrack alone. Terrorized on a forest camping site by three grotesque figures and a furious rottweiler, the nightmare that the main characters can't escape is replayed again and again. A white cat as a harbinger of bad news, a dark forest, a lonely witch's house and the tune from the music box create an atmosphere as if from a bad dream, a dream from which it is impossible to awaken. This dream in the case of Elin and Tobias is a huge loss suffered a few years earlier and although they seem ready to start a normal life, they are still struggling with anger, guilt, regret and pain. Each of the variants of the situation, repeated at the campsite, carries a story of mutual resentment and feelings of injustice, despair and love, which are intertwined with mourning in a knot of contradictory emotions.
