It’s Halloween in a small American town somewhere among fields of malevolent pumpkins. Devilish ranks of costumed pranksters roam the streets carrying sacks of treats and chopped-off-heads while jack-o-lanterns peek out from every window with their mocking smiles. The neighbors’ kids and demons from hell head out for a feeding frenzy at the same time asking everyone along the way, “trick or treat?” Canadian director Bruce McDonald, quite familiar to New Horizons audiences, returns with his latest movie. This time it’s a psychedelic Halloween horror about pumpkins, kids and demons. The conventional story of teen-age Dora with a pure heart and soft skin rapidly transforms into the grotesque nightmare of a crazed cinephile who watched Rosemary’s Baby, Children of the Corn and Home Alone.
Bruce McDonald was born in Kingston, Ontario in 1959. He studied film at Ryerson University in Toronto. After picking up a Toronto IFF award for his debut Roadkill,he commented that he would spend the $25,000 in prize money on a big chunk of hash. Hard Core Logo and its sequel both feature prominently in the mockumentary pantheon, while The Tracy Fragments (screened at the 9th NH) displayed innovative visual design and editing. McDonald works both in cinema and television, directing such series as The Bill, Queer as Folk, and Degrassi: The Next Generation. His films have earned him a devoted cult following.
