Primate Cinema: Apes as Family

Rachel Mayeri
USA, Scotland 2012 / 11’

The film’s assumption (it claims: this film has been made for chimpanzees and meant for a chimpanzee audience) has to astonish and cause consternation. The anthropoids’ reaction is essential in this work – they look at the other chimpanzees’ behaviour through television images. The author is driven by her fascination – she ceases to be a scientist and transforms into an invisible participant of the events. The film received a Golden Bear nomination at the Berlin film festival.
