Being 17

André Téchiné
Quand on a 17 ans
France 2016 / 116’

Everyone knows that puberty can be a traumatic period. First, we unexpectedly lose control over our bodies-its reactions become involuntary, awkward, and ostentatious. Second, our thoughts constantly revolve around a single subject. Third, our hormones encourage us to engage in irresponsible behavior. Damien and Tom, who use their last ounce of strength to defend themselves against homoerotic desire, know plenty about the subject. The former is the son of a local doctor, the latter has African roots and was adopted by farmers. They could not be more different-they are, in fact, polar opposites. When they start getting closer, however, sparks fly, which puts the local community on high alert, a community that had already cast the boys in certain roles: Damien with a diploma from a prestigious university and a career; Tom as an eternal farmhand. How the protagonists see themselves matters to no one beyond the sensitive director, a classic of French cinema.
