Perfect Strangers

Paolo Genovese
Perfetti sconosciuti
Italy 2016 / 97’

Several couples meet for dinner one warm evening. Each of them is tormented by certain problems, and everyone has their own solution. The company of friends, delicious food, and the upcoming lunar eclipse should help them relax and stop worrying about their daily lives a little. In reality, however, this is just the beginning of what turns out to be a test of strength, sincerity, loyalty, devotion, and patience. Someone suggests that they play game: until the end of the evening, all messages, e-mails, and conversations are to made public; there are to be no secrets at the table. With everyone's privacy at stake, can such a game possibly end well? This award-winning Italian hit by Paolo Genovese is a story about a group of friends who explore the depths of relationships in the modern world by experimenting with their own weaknesses, desires, needs, and hopes. It is a thoughtful combination of a light comedy and bitter drama that is full of tenderness and deeply embedded in the idea of cathartic, intelligent dialogue. The film stars Kasia Smutniak and Alba Rohrwacher, among others. Its international premiere took place at the Tribeca Festival.
