Via Carpatia

Klara Kochańska, Kasper Bajon
Poland, Macedonia, Czech Republic 2018 / 75’
Tigre

They were supposed to leave Poland in two weeks. They had been planning their dream vacation for months. Julia and Piotr meet at a family dinner with Piotr's mother, who is retiring and wants to get her affairs in order. She would like Piotr to bring home his father, a refugee who has spent the last few months living at a camp in Greece. Their marriage begins with a physically and mentally exhausting journey to Southern Europe. Via Carpatia is a road movie that touches on the immigration crisis consuming the Old Continent. With each passing kilometer, the film's protagonists (Julia Kijowska and Piotr Borowski in convincing performances) learn much more about each other than they would have found during a carefree, tropical holiday. Klara Kochańska and Kasper Bajon's intimate feature debut features a documentary-style authenticity that encourages viewers to reflect on overwhelming hypocrisy. Where should the signpost be placed in order to avoid the dangerous bend in the road ahead?
