Tigre

Silvina Schnicer, Ulises Porra Guardiola

The World Is Yours Via Carpatia

In the delta of Argentina's Tigre River, the water level is rising, causing the inhabitants to behave strangely. Patrols of unruly children appear in forests filled with unsettling sounds, where a lost girl is wandering and adults are also succumbing to an odd trance. Among them is Rina (Marilú Marini), who is returning to a run-down house on an island after being away for years. Together with her friend Elena and Elena's rebellious daughter Sabrina-the girl is experiencing her first friendships and sexual awakening-she awaits her long-lost son Facundo (Agustín Rittano). The question of what might happen between them in the haze of the sultry summer is, in the debut film by Silvina Schnicer and Ulises Porra Guardiola, just as important as their portrayal of the delta itself. Despite the ever-increasing advance of civilization, it remains wild, inhuman, mysterious-its special atmosphere, along with the insightful sketches of female characters and fragmentary nature of the narrative of Tigre might bring to mind the spirit of works by Lucrecia Martel or Milagros Mumenthaler, other directors from the New Argentine Cinema movement.
