Fassbinder – To Love Without Demands

Christian Braad Thomsen
Fassbinder: at elske uden at kræve
Denmark 2015 / 109’

When he died at the age of 37, Rainer Werner Fassbinder had made 40 feature films, 26 stage plays, a monumental television series and had appeared in countless amazing roles. He was the most prolific and one of the most important directors in post-war Germany. It is impossible to separate his rich creative work from his private life: both were characterized by an extraordinary intensity. Addiction, violence, and emotional blackmail were part of the everyday life of the actors with whom he built something of a commune or a foster family. His lovers, of both sexes, ended up on screen sooner or later. Fassbinder: To Love Without Demands is neither a biopic nor a critical essay; it is, rather, a psychoanalytical session conducted by his long-time friend. The basis of the film is a previously unknown interview that Fassbinder gave in Cannes in 1978, in which he speaks rather candidly about politics, creativity, psychoanalysis, and his own complicated family relations. The film also includes contemporary conversations with those who were close to him. The result is a portrait of a man driven by contradictions, by a cocktail of alcohol and drugs, and, more than anything, by passion.
