The Wind Rises

Hayao Miyazaki
Kaze tachinu
Japan 2013 / 126’

The latest animated production by Studio Ghibli takes viewers soaring into the heavens. Hayao Miyazaki, a big fan of aeronautics, once again presents the fascinating world of giant flying machines that has become an indispensable part of his creative work. The Wind Rises tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, who designs and builds airplanes for use during World War II. Miyazaki’s most restrained fusion of fantasy and reality so far suggests a changing approach to his work. The explosions of the imagination that have been so characteristic of Miyazaki’s worlds are, this time, replaced to a significant degree by raw reality, similar to that found in the work of his friend, Isao Takahata. Setting the story in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, Miyazaki does not shy away from dealing with subjects related to the country’s difficult history, and one of the first questions that he asks audiences is, Is Horikoshi building weapons or is he a passionate man who wants to make something beautiful?

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese director, animator, and manga artist who was born in Tokyo in 1941. Shortly after completing his studies in Economics and Political Science at Gakushuin University, he was employed as an animator. That was also when he met Isao Takahata, with whom he founded Studio Ghibli in 1985.
