Enemy

Denis Villeneuve
Canada, Spain 2013 / 90’

A film interpretation on the subject of doppelgangers and an adaptation of JoséSaramago’s The Double. A clumsy history teacher (Jake Gyllenhaal in a dual role) spots a face identical to his own in the background of a film he is watching. Both fascinated and horrified, he decides to find out who the actor is, and discovers someone identical to himself, right down to the smallest scar. Even their partners look like sisters. When their paths finally cross and their fates merge, the consequences of this event cannot be undone. Denis Villeneuve’s film goes beyond the formula of a classic thriller in the direction of an atmospheric, existentialist drama of the absurd. The way in which the subject is dealt with is rather Kafkaesque, while the dark atmosphere and a certain visual dose are reminiscent of the work of David Cronenberg. This is a visually tasteful film that is intoxicated with its own mystery and full of (sexual) tension. It is a dreamlike film that is not interested in rational answers.
