The Dance of Reality

Alejandro Jodorowsky
La danza de la realidad
Chile, France 2013 / 130’

The grand return to cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky: director, comic screenwriter, spiritual guru, therapist, and Mad Hatter. The Dance of Reality is an autobiographical story about growing up in Chile, though it is difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction. It is also a psychological drama in which the director’s son, playing the role of his grandfather, searches for the source of family trauma and tries to neutralize it. It is also a showpiece for Jodorowsky’s imagination, which combines a musical, a horror, a melodrama, and a fairy tale with surreal nonchalance. The semi-mythical land of his childhood is inhabited by colorful, caricatured figures: singing corpses, naked mystics, sad dwarves, slow-witted revolutionaries, and even less intelligent tyrants. Each fantastic episode, following the one before it with ecstatic speed and a lack of narrative rigor, is a parable during which the young hero learns how to overcome his inner darkness and to make contact with his adult self.

Alejandro Jodorowsky

Born in 1929 in Chile, Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of the most prolific, versatile, and original of all contemporary artists. He was a mime, he created the Panic Movement along with Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal, and he also used to write poems. His western El Topo gave rise to the phenomenon known as midnight movies. Later, he made The Holy Mountain, a classic of psychedelic cinema, and Santa Sangre, a surrealistic variation on Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. The Dance of Reality is his first film in 23 years.
