The Great Night

Petr Hátle
Velká noc
Czech Republic 2013 / 72’

It seems that Prague is a city where all of its light comes from inside. Evidence in support of this thesis can be seen in the latest film by Petr Hátle, whose work was recognized at the film festival in Jihlava as the best Czech documentary of 2013. Hátle portrays people living on the margins of society in Prague, those who are mainly active at night: prostitutes and transvestites waiting under streetlights, junkies and drunks sitting in dimly lit bars and musty apartments, and even a slutty young disco queen looking for fulfillment in the glow of pulsating lights. These people are united by their sleeplessness and their desire to meet similar outcasts in an unnamed subculture driven by amphetamines, alcohol, casual sex, unrealized plans, and unfulfilled dreams. Somewhere far off in the background looms the desire to break free of this spiral of nocturnal experiences and to have a better life, far from constant consumption and the artificial lights of the big city.
