Man Bites Dog

André Bonzel, Rémy Belvaux, Benoît Poelvoorde
C’est arrivé près de chez vous
Belgium 1992 / 95’

Man Bites Dog has been treated like a rabid stray – censors the world over have banished the brutal film. Although undeniably violent, the faux-documentary by actors/writers/directors André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde, and Rémy Belvaux is far from gratuitous. Their take on a few days in the life of a serial killer is a sharp satire of Western pop-culture that unsparingly skewers sensationalist reporters and filmmakers alike. Ben, the killer in question, is an egoistic, pseudo-intellectual, and boozy caricature of Hannibal Lecter. Following Ben while he goes about his business, the film crew begin to go beyond uninvolved observation. The film was a pointed critique of early ‘reality’ television. Maybe someone should have listened.
