Flaming Ears

Ursula Puerrer, A. Hans Scheirl, Dietmar Schipek
Rote Ohren fetzen durch Asche
Austria 1992 / 84’

A post-apocalyptic metropolis populated by antipathetic degenerates makes a jerry-rigged punk-style backdrop for a grotesque end-of-the-world theater. Lively stop motion-animated cars mock big-city traffic while the world remains enshrouded in darkness periodically penetrated by shots, shouts, and police sirens additionally highlighting the artificial convention and atrophy of this space. Sex and violence set the rhythm of human life (just like in every civilisation going to hell in a hand basket) in a film where murky nightmarish flashes reveal the stories of three women out for revenge, orgasm or the nourishing meat of mutant alligators. A cyberpunk fantasy that ‘San Francisco Weekly’ extolled as imagine the film that J.G. Ballard might have made if he’d been born an Austrian dyke.
