The opening film from the most recent Cannes Festival, Asghar Farhadi's psychological thriller. While Everybody Knows is set in the Spanish countryside and the dialogue is in Spanish, the themes that the director has been occupied with for years remain the same. The devastating power of family secrets, a haunting past, the ruthlessness of class divisions, hidden intentions and economic dependencies-Farhadi's latest film has it all. And just like in About Elly, everything begins with the disappearance of a young girl. Irene (Carla Campa) is the daughter of Laura (Penélope Cruz), a woman who left for Argentina years earlier and is now returning home for her sister's wedding. Irene disappears on the night of the wedding, and all that is left after the kidnapping are a few old press clippings on the bed. Her disappearance reveals hidden tensions, envy, passions and fears (it's not by chance that the first suspects are seasonal workers and immigrants), especially when Paco volunteers to help find the girl. He's Laura's former lover and the owner of a vineyard that Laura's relatives are laying claim to. Farhadi tells the story with his characteristic ease and lightness, combining excellent drama with top-notch direction and great acting.
Born in 1972, Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian director and screenwriter. As a teenager, he began making movies on 8 mm and 16 mm film before later studying Stage Direction and Drama in Tehran. He started working in television, making his cinematic debut with the film Dancing in the Dust. From the beginning, he was interested in realistic cinema, reflecting on the values of a young Iranian society. He creates ethical dilemmas for his characters, testing the extent to which they practice their ideals. His About Elly (2009) was a highlight at the Berlinale, and Farhadi took home the Golden Bear two years later for A Separation. That film won the Oscar for best foreign language film, as did The Salesman in 2016. In response to the ban issued by President Trump preventing Iranian citizens, among others, from traveling to the United States, Farhadi boycotted the Academy Awards in 2017.
