Up, Down, Fragile Who Knows

Working late in the lab, Sylvie finds her younger brother, Paul, with a gun in his hand. Paul explains to her that he has just discovered the real reason for their father's death. He did not commit suicide after all, as everyone has been claiming. His business partner, Walser, killed him, and Paul has evidence. Alarmed, and seeing her brother's determination and vulnerability, Sylvie decides to take matters into her own hands. With allusions to Hitchcock's Vertigo, among other films, Rivette makes a family drama that deepens his reflections on the notion of conspiracy. The first film to feature Rivette's collaboration with Polish actor Jerzy Radziwiłowicz.
